Phthalates, breast cancer, and plastics
make a profound difference. In many cases, we can truly predict and prevent breast cancer; and
we can monitor our progress.
Mammograms and early chemo cocktails are not my idea of prevention.
Now everyone knows you don’t just wake up one day and find out you have breast cancer.
Cancer growth is a process. It takes years before aberrant cells can accumulate to a point where
we can feel or even detect a lump. Most women have no idea that they are exposed to something every day that can dramatically speed cancer growth, excess estrogen and estrogen mimics.
Years ago, it was found that estrogen added to cancer cells caused the cancers to grow like
wild fire. Later researchers accidentally found that cancers cultured in plastic petri dishes had
dramatically accelerated growth even without adding estrogen. It turned out that the phthalates
leeching out of the plastic containers were such potent cast estrogen mimics that they turned
on the growth of cancer cells.
It’s obvious then that synthetic estrogens, whether they are from prescriptions or from estrogen
mimics, can alter our chances for breast and other types of cancer. The bad news is that our
society is swimming in a sea of estrogen.
Estrogen mimics or xenoestrogens are used in plastic bottles that hold pop and bottled water.
They’re also used in plastic wraps that wrap supermarket meats and vegetables, etc. Many of the pesticides and herbicides on our fruits and vegetables have estrogen like activity.
The meats we eat are also increasing our estrogen levels.
Animals are fed estrogen to increase their water weight before slaughter.
One dramatic study demonstrating the effects of zenoestrogens in our drinking water found that
male small mouth bass taken from a drinking water source actually had eggs in their testes.
EGGS IN THEIR TESTES!
Most women have no idea they are exposed to something everyday that can dramatically speed cancer growth. These fish were harvested from a river that provides drinking water for millions of people.
One of the best tests to predict and prevent breast cancer is the 2/16 hydroxyestrone test. It measures the ratio of “good” estrogen to “bad” estrogen. This simple urine test can predict years in advance whether your patients have the cellular soil that encourages cancer growth.
The article mentions the 16 alpha hydroxyestrone metabolite is a potent cancer “enhancer”; however, the 2-hydrolase estrogen metabolite actually “protects” us against cancer. If the 2/16 estrogen ratio favors the 16 hydroxyestrone, chances for cancer are significantly elevated. Ratios under 2 suggest an increased risk for breast cancer and with men prostate cancer, while ratios over 2 suggest healthy detoxification pathways and reduced risk.
Anyone concerned about breast cancer should start by reducing plastics, pesticides, and commercial meat exposure and begin the following: Eat at least 1 cup of the Brassica or cruciferous vegetables daily to detoxify the body and help keep this ratio in the correct balance. In fact, this will increase your body’s ability to detoxify harmful liver agents like Tylenol by 20 %.
Cruciferous veggies contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties:
diindolylmethane, sulforaphane, and selenium. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have recently discovered that 3, 3’-Diindolylmethane (or DIM) in Brassica vegetables has potent anti-cancer activity. DIM is actually derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol found in Brassica vegetables. Sulforaphane among other things increases Phase II detoxification and reduces free radical damage. Who would have ever thought that eating simple vegetables could have such strong anti-cancer properties?
Of course for men, cruciferous vegetable consumption is inversely related to the incidence of prostate cancer and reduces homocysteine levels. So you can see, these wonderful cancer preventers are not sexists. Ask us to get a list of these vegetables. And remember, just 1 cup a day can make a profound difference in long term health.
Here are some things you can do in terms of nutrients to affect estrogen ratios. The green drinkthat we carry from Biotics Research, NitroGreens, contains sprouted cruciferous vegetables broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. Chemo Does Not Cure: Often It Inflicts Damage and Spreads Cancer
(NaturalNews) For years now, many of us who advocate natural health and natural approaches to beating cancer have warned against the dangers and the ineffectiveness of chemotherapy. The following report presented at the 27th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium illustrates how chemo actually spreads cancer cells, as well as points out how little we are being told about the dangers of chemo:
“German investigators from Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, have shown that taxol (the “gold standard of chemo”) causes a massive release of cells into circulation.

“Such a release of cancer cells would result in extensive metastasis months or even years later, long after the chemo would be suspected as the cause of the spread of the cancer. This little known horror of conventional cancer treatment needs to be spread far and wide, but it is not even listed in the side effects of taxol.”
As has oft been stated, chemo does not cure cancer - it merely attempts to eliminate the tumors and cancer cells that are symptoms of the underlying causes of cancer, and does so with little success and great risks. In some instances it may appear to eliminate tumors and cancer cell masses, though most often it merely destroys some of the cancer cells. In the process, it often inflicts a very high price.
Besides spreading cancer cells, chemo inflicts serious and perhaps irreversible damage to the immune system, the body’s natural first line of defense against cancer and other illness - thus paving the way for the remaining cancer cells or future cancers to overwhelm a body that is even less able to beat the cancer that got past the immune system in the first place.
Chemo also frequently results in serious and even fatal damage, and major organs are also damaged, particularly the liver - which as cancer pioneer Max Gerson observed is always impaired to begin in those who get cancer. The heart is also frequently seriously damaged.
The end result is that chemo kills more patients than it “cures”. Most of those deaths are the result of liver or heart failure. Statistically, it has been estimated that the five year success rate from chemo is only about 3% (meaning only about 3% more patients who opted for chemo survived at least five years than did those who opted to not undergo chemo). But even that meager statistic is misleading in two key ways:
First of all, though survival rates are slightly higher for the first couple of years compared to those who opted out of chemo, after the third year the survival rate for those who opted out is greater than those who were treated with chemo and the gap widens significantly every year after that.
Secondly, and perhaps most important of all, the survival rates compare all of those who either undergo chemotherapy or decide against it. That includes the very large number of people who do little or nothing to address their cancer naturally and merely forego chemo. If chemo survival rates were compared with those of people who not only opted out of chemo, but also chose a non-invasive natural protocol to eliminate the toxins and other causes of cancer, to boost their immune systems and to attack the cancer naturally without inflicting damage to the rest of the body, there would surely be no comparison.
You can bet that it is a comparison the cancer industry never wants to make.

If you are becoming a bit of a 'toxic-chemical-spotter' then 'parabens' will no doubt be on your hit-list of 'key-chemicals-to-avoid'.
It is simply astounding that so many common products - bought off-the-shelf by unsuspecting customers still contain these chemicals that now clearly have such a bad reputation.
The paraben family - Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Butylparaben and Propylparaben - are often found 'hanging-around' together - in the heart of the chemical cocktails that adulterate many of our skincare, bodycare and hair care products.
Because personal care products - such as shave gels, body lotions, hand cremes, even toothpaste as well as many others - often contain oils and other potential 'perishable' ingredients, parabens are a commonplace preservative used to extend a products shelf-life.
The problem is though that these synthetic chemicals - which, for the 'chemistry scholars' amongst us are actually esters of hydroxybenzoic acid - are actually rather nasty!
The paraben family have all been known to cause allergic reactions in certain sensitive individuals. Indeed - where laboratories have undertaken 'animal testing' (which, naturally we do not condone) parabens have been shown to be clearly 'toxic' if ingested.
As far as humans go - the ongoing 'chemistry experiment' that we all partake in whenever we use chemical-based personal care products - has led to the conclusion that parabens can act as 'endocrine disrupters'.
That is to say that any of the paraben quartet may interrupt the working of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a system of glands that occur throughout the body, which release important hormones to regulate and control certain important functions. These functions include growth, sexual development, and the production of sperm in males, and ova in females.
The endocrine glands include: hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal gland, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenal, ovary, and testis. Disruption of the crucial functions of these glands can lead to many, varied health problems. It is for instance recognized that fertility in the general population of Western countries - like the UK and US has fallen dramatically in recent years. Just how much this problem has been contributed to by the pervasive use of parabens is impossible to calculate...but it is simple to say...we should ALL avoid using products that contain this unpleasant family of chemicals!
As if further evidence was needed that parabens are the sort of family you don't want in the neighborhood of your bathroom. They have also been shown to trigger contact dermatitis - that unpleasant, uncomfortable and visually distressing condition of the skin that can be so difficult to 'settle' and which can flare-up so easily when provoked by such as these chemical nasties!
Parabens, through the evidence of finding them in tumour biopsies, have also been implicated in possibly increasing the risk of breast cancer...
All-in-all...the message is...if you see one or more of the family of parabens hanging around in your usual personal care products..."bin them"... and change to 100% natural, and preferably certified products...which are SURE to be chemical free!

ACIDOSIS is the basic foundation of all disease. We need to understand the simple process of alkalizing our body and the important role a properly alkalized body plays in restoring and maintaining our overall health. Our glands and organs function properly in exact proportion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system. THE IMPACT OF ACIDOSIS ON YOUR ORGANS:
HEART
The heart is one of the most alkaline-dependent organs in the body. It is partly enervated by the vagus nerve which functions best in an alkaline environment. Correct heartbeat is altered by acid wastes. These wastes rob the blood of proper oxygenation and degeneration of the heart follows. An alkaline system creates an ideal heart function.
STOMACH
Digestive difficulties (belching, bloating, sensitivity at the waist, intestinal gas, regurgitation, hiccups, lack or limitation of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, colic in children) may indicate vagus nerve problems and possible hiatus hernia syndrome, which can produce acid residue throughout the system. Hiatus hernia can quickly reduce necessary hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Without proper hydrochloric acid breakdown of foods, the foods become too acidic.
LIVER
The liver has over three hundred functions, including processing acid toxins from the blood and producing numerous alkaline enzymes for the system and is your first line of defense against any poisons. All the nourishment obtained through the gastrointestinal tract enters the blood by way of the liver. The load on the liver is much heavier when acid waste products are constantly floating in the blood. If the liver becomes too congested with protein acid wastes, death is imminent.
PANCREAS
The pancreas is highly dependent on correct alkaline diet. All aspects of pancreatic function reduce excess acidity and regulate blood sugar balance. To have proper blood sugar balance, you must maintain a primarily alkaline-forming diet.
SMALL INTESTINES
The Peyer's Patches, in the upper portion of the small intestines are crucial to life. They are essential for proper assimilation of food and producing lymphocytes for the lymphatic system's wide ranging nodal network. They also produce large amounts of the enzyme "chyle", which is a major alkalizing substance. The uninterrupted flow of chyle into the system is crucial. Too much acid waste production from acid-forming foods is a great burden on the Peyer's Patches, which lessens the production of chyle.
KIDNEYS
In an adult, about 1 liter of blood per minute passes through the kidneys. By executing their primary duty, the kidneys keep the blood alkaline and extract acid. Kidneys that are over-stressed with too much acidity create kidney stones, which are composed of waste acid cells and mineral salts that have become gummed together in a waste acid substance. Therefore, by reducing acid-forming products from entering the body, the chances are better that you can avoid this painful condition.
COLON
The colon must be kept clean of accumulated acid wastes. Poisons collect on the colon walls and in cases of diarrhea or constipation will harden and reabsorb into the bloodstream. Good bowel action (complete elimination) must be done at least 2 times per day.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
There are 600-700 lymph glands in the body. Lymph fluid carries nutrition to the cells and removes acid waste products. Lymph fluid flows best in an alkaline environment. When the body is overly acidic, it slows, creating one of the most chronic, long-term, life-threatening situations. Gradually, the lymph dries and begins to form very tiny to very large adhesions throughout the tissues. These adhesions can interfere not only with lymph fluid but with blood flow as well. Hindered lymph flow increases tissue acid storage. Not drinking enough purified water will also slow the lymph. Waste products from foods that are not properly digested are reabsorbed into general circulation via the lymphatic ducts of the small intestine. In addition, bowel movements that do not completely clear the body of its daily poisons are also reabsorbed.
HOW NEGATIVE EMOTIONS CREATE ACIDITY: Have you ever been so upset with someone or something that you get an upset stomach? All negative emotions create an acidic environment. Have you ever heard anyone say you are letting your problems "eat away at you" or "get the best of you"? Fear is the underlining cause of most disease. It will undermine your life and your health. Fear causes anger. Anger causes hate. Hate will consume you with continual suffering. Love and understanding cleanse and heal the body creating an alkaline environment within you.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
EXERCISE
Moderate exercise is alkalizing to the body. Excessive exercise (past the point of exhaustion) can create an acidic problem due to lactic acid buildup. People who are acidic usually feel worse from exercise because their detoxification organs are not working properly due to excessive acid in the tissues. Yet without exercise, acid and toxin buildup are likely.
QUALITY AIR
As the saying goes - "every step you take, every breath you take ...".If your environment is polluted with chemicals, dust, smoke, pet dander, mold, micro-organisms, then much of your energy reserve will go just in detoxifying. Today, even in the forest and near the ocean, the amount of negative ions are much lower than they were only a few decades ago. Also, since we sealed buildings to conserve energy and started making our homes and furnishings with synthetic materials, the number of cases of asthma and chronic fatigue have risen dramatically.
FOOD COMBINING

As a concerned and aware consumer, do you really have anything to worry about as far as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is concerned?
It would appear that we have two quite differing views on the safety of using and exposing the body to constant low levels of toxic chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). Ethoxylation: Ethoxylation is the process that makes degreasing agents such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) less abrasive and gives them enhanced foaming properties. When SLS is ethoxylated, it forms Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), a compound used in many shampoos, toothpastes, bath gels, bubble baths, and industrial degreasants. The problem is, the extremely harmful compound 1,4-dioxane may be created during the ethoxylation process, contaminating the product. 1,4-dioxane was one of the principal components of the chemical defoliant Agent Orange, used to great effect by the Americans during the Vietnam War to strip off the jungle canopy to reveal their enemy. 1,4-dioxane is a hormonal disrupter believed to be the chief agent implicated in the host of cancers suffered by Vietnam military personnel after the war. It is also an oestrogen mimic thought to increase the chances of breast cancer and endometrial cancer, stress related illnesses and lower sperm counts.
Dr Samuel Epstein (Author and research Scientist) reports: "The best way to protect yourself is to recognise ingredients most likely to be contaminated with the1,4-dioxane. These include ingredients with the prefix word, or syllable PEG, Polyethylene, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyoxyethylene, eth (as in sodium laureth sulphate) or oxynol. Both polysorbate 60 and polysorbate 80 may also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. (Epstein, Dr Samuel, Safe Shoppers Bible, P.190-191)

Two Great Reasons to Buy Organic Foods

Why should you consider buying organic produce and foods? Consider your health and the environment's.
Health Considerations
Pesticides are poisons, designed to kill living things, and the accumulation of residues is greater on conventional foods than on organic ones. Studies suggest that low-level exposure to pesticides over several years can cause health problems. Pesticide-related illnesses among farm workers who handle these toxics are well documented. Immediate problems include lung and eye irritation, nausea and short-term nerve damage. Long-term risks include cancer and Lou Gehrig's disease.
Most of the commonly used manmade pesticides are potential carcinogens. Pesticides are also endocrine disrupters that mimic or interfere with hormones. The effect on our bodies is the topic of studies now underway. A 1987 National Academy of Science report suggested that many common pesticides can cause birth defects, cancer and nerve damage, as well as disrupting the immune system.
One of the most compelling reasons to buy organic foods is for the health of your children. Their exposure to pesticides is greater than an adult's. Children eat more fruits and vegetables relative to their body weight. Their diet is less varied -- so they may consume more of one pesticide than others, allowing it to accumulate to toxic levels. Because children are exposed to these chemicals early in their life, when their detoxification system isn't fully developed, they have more years to accumulate chemicals in their body tissue. A report released by the Environmental Working Group, "Pesticides in Children's Food," concluded that the largest contribution to a person's lifetime risk of cancer from pesticide residues occurs during childhood.
Environmental Concerns
Although human health risks are still not proven, and nutritional benefits are uncertain, there is no doubt that conventional farming methods damage the environment. In 1995, U.S. farmers applied 566 million pounds of pesticides to food crops and growing fields. Much of it ends up in your drinking water and in the water used by fish and animals. A summer, 1997, U.S. Geological Survey found at least one pesticide in half of the 5,000 water samples it took from rivers and nearly all the samples it took from wells.
Unlike organic farming, industrialized farming results in topsoil erosion. Conventional farming is also leading to the development of resistant strains of insects and pests. The synthetic chemicals applied to the soil are persistent, often remaining in the environment for years and putting us at risk for decades to come. As conventional farmers rely on limited varieties of crops, nutritional diversity declines and there is a greater risk of total crop damage from blight or disease.

Is This The Greatest Medical Discovery In 100 Years
The CBS news show, 60 minutes did a full blown “in depth story” on the research.
I was reminded as I watched . . . this is big stuff!
It’s so significant that Dr. Mark Houston, an internationally known lecturer, says the discovery of a class of enzymes called sirtuins is the greatest medical breakthrough in the last 100 years. Dr. Houston says and I quote, “I think for the first time we not only have the ability to modify the aging process, but also the quality of aging."
We now have the ability to expand human life, but also to make that life a higher quality by reducing all the medical diseases people typically get when they get older.”
Sirtuins are a class of enzymes. As the activities of sirtuins are increased, so do the benefits. Sirtuins are universal regulators of aging in virtually all living organisms and represent a prime target for new anti-aging drugs. "It's looking like these sirtuins serve as guardians of the cell," said Harvard Medical School researcher David Sinclair.
"These enzymes allow cells to survive damage and delay cell death."
Some of the roles sirtuins play in animals are: gene silencing, DNA repair, increased lifespan,
increased cell survival, increases in energy metabolism, and positive response to stressors.
Needless to say, the pharmaceutical race is on to make the most potent drug that will enhance
sirtuin function. In fact, one company just bought out Dr. Sinclair’s lab for ¾ of a billion
dollars. In today’s economy nobody pays that kind of money unless the data is solid.
Fortunately for us, one of the best compounds to naturally increase sirtuin activity, as many of you know, is found in red wine. The compound accredited to this increased activity is resveratrol. In studies, yeast treated with resveratrol survived 60 percent longer. Resveratrol was then shown to extend the lifespan of worms and flies by nearly 30 percent and fish by almost 60 percent.
In fact, an animal study was recently released that showed an amazing 31% increase in lifespan
just using resveratrol. Treating mice with resveratrol while they were on a high-calorie diet even prevented many liver abnormalities.
Another study at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch,
France, provided resveratrol to mice and looked at their endurance. The resveratrol mice were
able to run twice as far as the control mice in the same time period, weight gain was controlled, and diabetes was prevented. Long life, more endurance, weight control, disease prevention…can you see why the pharmaceutical companies will want to synthesize it and
patent it?
To give you an idea of the resveratrol in red wine: 1 liter of high quality Pinot Noir wine has about 5 mg of resveratrol. We don’t know the exact dose that is optimal for humans at this
time; however, the animal studies were done using a dose of 22 mg per kilogram. So if we
add a zero on our weight that gives us an idea of the amount we need. A 160 pound person
would take 1600 mg per day, which would be about 300 bottles of wine per day.
Let’s look at some other data about resveratrol and its clinical benefits. From a cardiovascular
perspective, it reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, inhibits arterial plaque, prevents
blood clots, normalizes blood pressure and helps to regulate blood sugar. It also enhances
the bodies’ antioxidant pool, specifically glutathione.
From an immunological perspective, resveratrol inhibits viral, fungal, and bacterial growth.
Resveratrol has anti-cancer properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and prevents bone loss.
Here is an important point however, and one that you should be aware of with your patients:
there are 2 forms of resveratrol, a cis form and a trans form. The trans form is the biologically
active form. This is yet another example of how we are at the mercy of the manufacturer
and their suppliers. Manufacturers’ can in good conscience order trans-resveratrol with the intention of using only the purest ingredients; but unless they have the ability to verify their
raw material, there’s no guarantee they have the correct form. It’s like roulette, resveratrol
roulette.

The Remarkable Hormore . . . Insulin
I’ll give you some optimal lab values in a minute, but before I do, think about it. What role
does insulin play in the body? Remember, insulin is essential to pull sugar or glucose into
the cell to keep homeostatis in the blood. The sugar is then burned for energy or stored for later
use.
Excess sugar is stored as fat, and for our ancestors that may have been a good thing because they didn’t have the instant access to food that we have. But because our culture consumes SO many refined sugars, our very cells try to resist extra sugar intake because they can only store so much sugar as fat in a healthy manner. So, in order to reduce the amount of sugar coming into
the cells, the cells will ultimately reduce the amount of insulin receptor sites.
Well, that’s good for the cells, but bad for the bloodstream. Insulin can’t get into the cells, so it
remains in the blood. Remember, part of insulin’s job is to convert sugar to fat wherever it is. So now the excess insulin in the blood causes excess fat in the blood.
Dr. Ron Rosedale in his book “The Rosedale Diet” quotes a study where insulin was dripped
into the arteries of dogs and in just a few months the artery became blocked with plaque. Plaque
buildup can deprive the heart of blood and oxygen and eventually cause a heart attack.
As a person continues to ingest refined carbohydrates and the insulin continues to be made, it
drives the body into a fat storage mode rather than a fat burning mode. We use the term
insulin resistance, meaning a healthy cells response to excess refined carbohydrates.
Insulin has many key roles that will not be fulfilled if blood sugars are elevated; let’s look at a
few of them.
Insulin is necessary to pull magnesium into the cell. Blocked insulin receptor sites in the cell
mean low cellular magnesium levels and magnesium is critical for energy production, healthy
heart, vascular, and blood pressure regulation.
Excess insulin in the bloodstream causes retention of sodium which in turn causes increases in
blood pressure and fluid retention. There is also a significant correlation between elevated insulin levels and certain types of cancer, namely: breast, colon, prostate, and pancreatic cancer.
Poor sugar regulation and insulin dysregulation has also been indicated in aging, memory problems, fatigue, anxiety and depression, immune suppression, obesity, vascular disease, and as I mentioned heart disease.
The fasting insulin levels I like to see should be 10 or lower, under 6 is ideal. Traditional lab values suggest treatment should begin when levels exceed 18; however, if fasting insulin levels are over 10, insulin resistance is well under way and needs serious attention.
Therapeutically, we need to make sure the patient reduces their level of refined and even their starchy carbohydrates until levels are stabile and life style changes are made.
Exercise is critical for anyone who is struggling with insulin resistance. Cells will burn sugar
with activity and movement. So the best way to reduce sugar, (besides not eating it) is to
burn it.
Keep in mind, the most stubborn cases of insulin resistance usually involve one or more food allergens, so reducing food allergens can be important.
As far as supplements, there are several options, but let me remind you to start treatment with the basics and adjust from there as you change your lifestyle.

Vitamin D Provides a Wide Range of Health Benefits: Implications for Cancer Prevention and the Treatment of Inflammatory and Metabolic Diseases

An increasingly well-documented and consistent body of literature shows that vitamin D has clinically-significant anticancer and anti-inflammatory benefits, and that the attainment of optimal serum levels of vitamin D also confer protection against diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, and hypertension. In this brief review, we will also discuss clinical trials that have used vitamin D in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome, migraine headaches, depression, epilepsy, and musculoskeletal pain. We also elucidate new guidelines for the interpretation of serum 25(OH)vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D deficiency is an underappreciated epidemic that has heretofore received insufficient attention from clinicians in all disciplines. Given the clinical consequences of hypovitatminosis D, it is indefensible that doctors fail to diagnose and treat this condition (ICD-9 code 268.x) since numerous studies have documented the remarkably high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in medical patients (Kauppinen-Makelin R, et al. J Intern Med.
2001 Jun;249(6):559-63 and Thomas MK,...et al. N.Eng! J..Med. 1998 Mar !9;338(12):777-83). This article will serve to update clinicians on the diagnosis and treatment of this important and common health problem, and we have included our recommendations for laboratory testing to facilitate the clinical applicability of this information.
Vitamin D is metabolized in two distinct pathways: 1) endocrine-relevant to calcium absorption and bone metabolism, and 2) autocrine-relevant to the modulation of intracellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, inflammation, and gene transcription. Relatedly, vitamin D deficiency is seen in two distinct forms: 1) acute deficiency diseases such as rickets and hypocalcemia, and 2) long-latency deficiency diseases which
manifest only after years of subacute deficiency (Heaney RP. Am J Clin Nutr. 2003 Nov;78(5):912-9). According to the current research literature, long-term vitamin D deficiency contributes to an increased risk for cancer, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, and insulin resistance, and each of these clinical entities will be discussed in the sections that follow.
· Cancer: Cancer risk and vitamin D deficiency go hand-in-hand. The risk of cancer in humans increases in direct proportion to the reduction in sun exposure, a fact that has been repeatedly verified since its first publication more than 60 years ago. Based on this extensive data, Dr William Grant has estimated that at least 23,000 and perhaps as many as 47,000 cancer deaths might be prevented each year in America if we employed simple interventions to raise vitamin D levels (Cancer 2002;94:1867-75).
· Hypertension: Suboptimal levels of vitamin D increase the risk for and severity of hypertension, and augmentation of vitamin D levels with sunlight or oral supplementation safely and consistently reduces blood pressure in hypertensive patients (PfeiferM, et al. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2001 Apr;86:1633-7
· Insulin resistance: Patients with vitamin D deficiency show an increased prevalence of insulin resistance.
Authors of a recent study concluded that improving vitamin D status such as with oral supplementation could improve insulin sensitivity by 60%, indicating that vitamin D treatment ''is more potent than either troglitazone or metformin treatment (54% and 13% improvement in insulin sensitivity, 0 respectively.)"o (Chiu KC, et al. Am J Clin Nutr 2004; 79:820-5).
· Depression: Vitamin D administration was shown to improve mood within 5 days of treatment in a controlled clinical trial of patients with wintertime depression (Lansdowne AT, Provost SC. Psychopharmacology (Berl). 1998;135:319-23)
· Epilepsy: VitapJin D deficiency can cause seizures. Medications used to treat epilepsy commonly cause vitamin D deficiency, which can then result in iatrogenic epilepsy (All FE, et al. Ann Pharmacother . 2004;38:1002-5). Administration of vitamin D shows an anticonvulsant benefit (Christiansen C, et al. Br Med J. 1974;2:258-9).
· Polycystic ovary syndrome: Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent among 13 women with PCOS, and supplementation with 1,500 mg of calcium per day and 50,000 IV of vitamin D2 on a weekly basis normalized menstruation and/or fertility in nine of nine women with PCOS-related menstrual irregularities within three months of treatment (Thys-Jacobs S, et al. Steroids 1999;64:430-5)
· Osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain: Osteoarthritis develops more frequently and progresses more rapidly in patients who are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is alarmingly common in patients

Exciting Cancer Breakthrough
Cancer is more preventable than you think. My mind was reeling as I read the data. It's inspiring to me, and I have to share it with you. I believe one of the most exciting breakthroughs of the century has been documented by an oncologist from Rome, Italy, Dr. Tullio Simoncini. He has written a book called "Cancer is a Fungus”, and he details his work treating cancer as a fungus.
He uses sodium bicarbonate and literally injects and/or bathes the tumor in this alkalizing solution and has seen some tumors disappear in as little as a week.
Let me reiterate that he is a medical doctor who is a board certified oncologist, trained in Europe, and has treated thousands of patients in the traditional manner. Many of his patients were children, and it broke his heart to watch them die so painfully. He re-counts that he often found himself prayerfully asking God how can he find a way to help these suffering children,and then the observation came that opened the door to a whole new way of treating cancer.
He noticed that when he scoped the patients to observe their tumors they were white. For some reason he put the connection together that fungi are also white. He admits that some tumors are also bloody but when the blood is washed away the white color is unmistakable.
Remember the Warburg hypothesis. Years ago, Dr. Warburg received a Nobel Prize for his work showing that cancer grows in an acidic, anaerobic environment and thrives where sugar abounds—surprise—surprise, so do fungi. Give them a little sugar, lack of oxygen and an acidic medium and you have a recipe for growth. Remember that most fungi give off messages that will weaken and/or impede the immune system. If we impede the immune system, we have fertile ground for tumor growth.

It is easy to become engrossed on his site as he has videos and materials describing his techniques. Here are some case studies from his website. The first is a case of a 60 year old patient with melanoma of the lower eyelid. After just 10 days of treatment, the protruding mass was undetectable and after 2 months the melanoma is totally eliminated.
Another case on his website was that of a 9 year old with Ewing’s sarcoma on the right humerus. Before treatment there were 3 tumors ranging from 2.4 to 6 centimeters. Within just 30 days an echo scan revealed almost complete regression of 2 of the 3 tumors, and after only 3 months only minor residual scarring remained—using a sodium bicarbonate solution!
On his website he outlines a rationale for breast cancer, bladder tumors, brain cancer,and cancers of the spleen, intestine, liver, lung and a host of others. Based on his research and those of his peers he concludes that Candida is always in the tissues of cancer patients. Candida is an opportunistic organism and many researchers feel it occurs as a result of a weak immune system. Dr. Simoncini feels it is an important precursor to the disease process. As I mentioned, he uses sodium bicarbonate in a catheter and literally pipes the bicarbonate solution to the tumor site. Alkalizing the gland and surrounding area creates an environment that the fungus does not thrive. We can eat an alkaline diet and use anti-fungals when appropriate for prevention. The take home message for our clients is that sugar is fuel for cancer as well as a host of other medical conditions. This is huge news and for the European medical community to document this finding is exciting. With this understanding we can see why so many different types of therapies create an environment that supports spontaneous remission. Think about it. Whether it is a macrobiotic diet, Dr’s Gerson or even Dr. Lorraine Day’s cancer strategy, all have the same biological end result: an alkaline pH and little or no sugar. Eat more plants and eat them in the way God created them.

Coffee
For example, one 2004 study found that drinking coffee disrupted short-term word recall. This was promptly followed up by research published the following year, showing that the equivalent of two cups of coffee could improve short-term memory, prioritizing information efficiently, planning new tasks, and dealing with stored information.
I wonder who paid for the latter research? Hmmm.
Should You Drink Coffee?
It appears that drinking coffee may interfere with your body's ability to keep homocysteine and cholesterol levels in check, most likely by inhibiting the action of the vitamins folate, B12 or B6. Coffee has been previously associated with increased risk of stroke and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have also shown that caffeine in coffee can raise blood pressure and levels of stress hormones, and if consumed in large quantities it can lead to heart palpitations, jitters and nervousness.
With that said, coffee is clearly not the healthiest liquid to drink – your best choice is pure water -- but coffee is still far less dangerous than fruit juice or soda.
While I do believe that eliminating, or at the very least limiting, coffee should be one of your goals. You'll definitely want to eliminate soda and fruit juice from your beverage list first.
There are, however, some important facets of coffee that you should know before you have your next morning cup.
The Dangers of Caffeine During Pregnancy
Pregnant women should NEVER drink coffee.
Caffeine is a stimulant drug that easily passes through the placenta to your developing fetus and is also transferred through breast milk.
During pregnancy and in infants, the half-life of caffeine is increased, which means that it will stay in your body, and your infant's body, longer. Moreover, fetuses have no ability to detoxify caffeine.
Research suggests that drinking more than 300 mg of coffee daily, or the equivalent of two to three 8-ounce cups, may increase the risk of miscarriage, birth defects such as cleft palate, and low birth weight. But as I mentioned above, I don't believe that ANY amount coffee is safe when you're pregnant.
Even with moderate caffeine intake, when the woman experiences no effects, studies have found changes in both the mother's and the fetal heart rate and blood pressure. Preliminary studies also suggest that drinking four cups of coffee or more per day may put the infant at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Caffeine may also make it more difficult for women to maintain necessary levels of iron and calcium, which are especially important during pregnancy.
Would you like your coffee with cream and DDT?
There Probably Are Pesticides in Your Java. Coffee also has the issue of pesticide contamination, which is particularly harmful during pregnancy.
Coffee is usually not grown in the United States and we therefore have no control over which and how many pesticides are sprayed on coffee crops. And coffee is a heavily sprayed crop, so drinking coffee is likely to expose you to a dose of pesticides with each cup.
Pesticides have been associated with a number of health problems such as:
Prostate cancer and other cancers
Parkinson's Disease
Miscarriages
Aside from any pesticide residues that make it into your brew, there's also the issue of whether buying coffees grown with the help of potentially harmful chemicals contributes to the destruction of the environment and threatens the health of poor coffee farm workers.
If you choose to drink coffee, drinking organic coffee will hopefully reduce or eliminate your exposure to toxic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers, and would be a more environmentally conscientious choice. The only drawback is that many of the 45 countries where coffee is produced have less control and monitoring for compliance to organic practices.
Avoid Coffee if You Have Certain Health Issues
Since coffee is a stimulant it will only worsen symptoms of insomnia and anxiety, and should definitely be avoided if you're already suffering from either. People with panic or anxiety disorders may find that they are especially sensitive to caffeine and may find that even a small amount of the stimulant exacerbates their symptoms.
Similarly, the caffeine will linger in your body for hours after you drink it, so it might keep you up at night even if you drink it long before bedtime.
-Personal experience: I drank an iced coffee this month, because I was tired. I only drink coffee about once per month, if that. Well, at 1:30 pm I drank, I was fine. By 6pm I was dry heaving. I know it was from the coffee. My Lebanese friends used give me strong imported Lebanese coffee to drink because we were studying and I still had no effects from the caffeine. It was only until the past efew years that I actually developed the "normal" caffeine drug effects.
For those with high blood pressure, a general rule is that the more caffeine you drink in a day, the higher your blood pressure will be. So if you are already at the higher end of the scales, drinking coffee will only increase your blood pressure further.
Also Protein Nutritional Types do not do well with caffeine and should only consume coffee or tea in small quantities, and not in the late afternoon or evening, as it will likely keep them up. (However this can be a good thing if you are using coffee as a drug for jet lag).
How to Wean Yourself off Coffee
If you try to stop drinking coffee "cold turkey" you will likely experience symptoms of withdrawal. According to one study, the more caffeine you use, the worse your withdrawal symptoms will be. This is because even small amounts of caffeine, such as one standard cup of coffee a day, can create an addiction. For those who consume it regularly, cutting even the smallest amount of caffeine could result in a range of withdrawal symptoms such as:
Headache
Fatigue or drowsiness
Depression and irritability
Lack of concentration
Flu-like symptoms such as nausea and muscle pain
This can be avoided by cutting down the amount you drink gradually over a period of days, or even weeks. It's also important to drink plenty of water during the process in order to keep your body well hydrated.
If you find that you miss your morning coffee-drinking ritual, replace it with a new tradition that will also boost your health and energy. Vegetable juice makes a great coffee replacement. It will give you the energy boost that you're looking for in the morning without the negative effects of caffeine.
While you're in the process of weaning yourself off coffee, here are some tips to reduce the chance of harmful effects until you can completely eliminate it:
Use organic coffee. As mentioned above, coffee is a heavily sprayed crop, so drinking organic coffee might reduce or eliminate your exposure to toxic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. It will also help the people working in the coffee fields, as they will be exposed to fewer pesticides as well.
Try "Swiss Water Process" decaf. If you are going to drink decaffeinated coffee, be sure that it uses a non-chemical based method of decaffeination. The "Swiss Water Process" is a patented method and is the best choice. Most of the major brands are chemically decaffeinated, even if it says "naturally decaffeinated" right on the container. If you are unsure of the methods, contact the manufacturer.
Avoid sugar and milk. These are actually much worse for you than the coffee itself. Don't compound the detrimental health effects by adding milk or sugar to your coffee.
Only use unbleached filters. If you use a "drip" coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones, which most people use, are chlorine bleached and some of this chlorine will be extracted from the filter during the brewing process.

Accidental Discovery Leads To Breast Cancer Clues
wants to be up to speed on. We’re talking effective,
and we’re talking prevention of breast cancer,
ovarian cancer and prostrate cancer.
A few years ago, cell biologist Dr. Ana Soto was
working out the biochemical details of estrogen
sensitivity and its relationship to breast cancer
when something puzzling happened in her Tufts
University laboratory. Tissues growing in plastic
dishes containing no estrogens started proliferating
as if they contained estrogen. “This indicated that
some type of contamination had occurred," Soto
remembered. “We made an accidental discovery."
Soto traced the contamination to the plastic tubes
she was using to store blood serum.
Working with her colleague Carlos Sonnenschein,
Soto purified the contaminant and identified it as
nonylphenol, a chemical added during the manufacture
of plastic to prevent it from cracking. They discovered
molecules of nonylphenol were being shed
from the tubes into the serum. Soto and Sonnenschein
went on to prove that nonylphenol is estrogenic.
That is, it mimics the effect of estrogen
when added to tissues containing estrogen receptors.
In a series of experiments published in 1991, Soto
demonstrated that human breast tissue proliferates
in the presence of nonylphenol, possibly placing it
on the path to tumor formation.
This type of chemical and all other man-made chemicals that have
ability to mimic estrogen in the body are classified
with the name xenoestrogens. Many of these mimicking
hormones were previously thought to occur
only in pesticides; however, many of the "newly
discovered xenoestrogens” are found in materials
that were once thought to be inert.
Xenoestrogens are found in all kinds of plastics and
in the hormones used by stockmen and farmers to
fatten up animals for market—beef, chicken, turkey,
and pork. They are also found in detergents,
canned foods, and personal care products like
shampoos, sunscreens, and soaps. There are various
estimates stating that we are surrounded with
anywhere from 100,000 to 600,000 man-made
chemicals that belong to this group of xenoestrogens.
Xenoestrogens are linked to many forms of
cancer but mostly breast and ovarian cancer in
women and prostate cancer in men. They are also
responsible for premature sexual development of
boys and girls.
How can we protect ourselves from this onslaught
of xenoestrogens? Of course there are
some obvious choices we can make in our lifestyle:
avoid plastics, use natural health care products, and
eat organic especially when it comes to animal
products. Even with these changes there is a problem
with xenoestrogens being fat soluble, which
means they stay in the body for a long time. An
effective solution, one that can diminish the effects
of xenoestrogens, is the use of a natural progesterone
cream.
Both men and women need progesterone in levels
that the average person is not getting. Progesterone
effectively prevents the binding of xenoestrogens in our cells. It is the imbalance of estrogen to progesterone
ratio that sets up the breast cancer or
uterine cancer in the women. It is this imbalance
of estrogens to progesterone in the male that contributes
prostate problems. This imbalance can
also be a factor in heart disease and autoimmune
disorders in men AND women. But as with many
products, not all progesterone products are equal.

tends to break down too fast, and it’s hard to get a
reliable dosage. The liquid forms are peaking too

Fish Oil May Protect Against Colon Cancer
The researchers, led by Joanne R. Lupton, a professor who holds appointments in animal science, food science and technology, nutritional sciences and veterinary anatomy and public health and holder of the William W. Allen Endowed Chair in Nutrition, and Raymond J. Carroll, Distinguished Professor of Statistics, Nutrition and Toxicology says, "Fish oil seems to protect against colon cancer while corn oil not only does not protect against it but appears to promote it."
Lupton stated that when the fatty acid composition of the cell membranes in the colon is changed, it sets up a different fate for the cell.
